Kenyan-based assistive technology startup Signvrse has been selected for the prestigious Google.org Accelerator: Generative AI, a global initiative supporting tech-driven solutions for social impact. As one of the few African enterprises in the $30 million program, Signvrse’s inclusion marks a major milestone in advancing inclusive communication for Deaf communities across the continent.

Signvrse was previously supported through Innovate Now, Africa’s first assistive technology accelerator based in Kenya. Led by the Global Disability Innovation Hub (GDI Hub) in partnership with Kilimanjaro Blind Trust Africa (KBTA) and funded by UK International Development under the AT2030 programme. Today's Innovate Now accelerator is funded by NORAD. Innovate Now played a critical role in supporting early-stage development of Signvrse’s inclusive communication technology. The accelerator provided mentorship, ecosystem linkages, and visibility that helped the venture grow into one of Africa’s leading AI-for-accessibility startups.

“Being selected into the Google.org Accelerator is a transformative opportunity,” said Elly Savatia, Founder & CEO of Signvrse. “With Google’s support, we’re able to scale our real-time sign language interpretation platform and move closer to bridging communication barriers for millions of Deaf individuals who have historically been excluded.”

Signvrse’s flagship platform, Terp 360, uses generative AI, 3D avatars, and motion capture to convert text and speech into Sign Language (AfSL) in real-time. The tool is already in use across East Africa — from classrooms and government portals to nonprofit websites — enabling Deaf users to interact with digital content and public information independently.

The Google.org Accelerator will provide Signvrse with six months of tailored technical support, access to AI expertise, cloud credits, and a share of the $30 million fund. With these resources, Signvrse aims to expand its AI-powered vocabulary model to support more African sign languages, improve avatar precision, and grow its partnerships with disability-serving organizations.

Signvrse’s journey reflects a larger shift in African tech innovation, where inclusive design and social impact are driving cutting-edge solutions. As the startup continues to grow, it remains rooted in its original mission: breaking down communication barriers and building a digitally inclusive Africa.
